Even farther back than November, in September, Maggie and I had a spontaneous day trip in Takayama City in Gifu Prefecture. We had woken up at four am and were supposed to be meeting a group of ALTs to hike Mount Hakusan. However, we groggily drove in the opposite direction for about 45 minutes. By the time we righted ourselves and were on the correct side of the mountain , we realized that we would be more than a hour late to meet our group who would have begun the ascent without us. Making a spur of the moment decision on the highway we veered toward Takayama exit and headed for morning of markets and fresh coffee instead of desperately dashing up a mountain behind our friends.

The town was adorable and very relaxed. When December came around, and we were faced with Christmas shopping for Japan gifts for family and friends we decided to head back out to Takayama, this time with Karen and Creighton. Again the town was beautiful and perfect for an afternoon of strolling down main street perusing potential gifts. We would have had more of a day than just an afternoon, had we not missed our exit and had to drive twenty minutes down the highway to correct our mistake. By the time we arrived in Takayama it was already mid-afternoon. But we had large bowls of tasty ramen for dinner and snapped to evening pictures before heading back.
